Estaciones del Huéznar Trail

The Sendero de las Estaciones del Huéznar constitutes one of the best examples of how the natural landscape and industrial history can be understood as a single ensemble. The route makes use of part of the former railway corridor built during the 19th century to connect the Sierra Norte with Seville, a decisive infrastructure for the transport of minerals, iron and steel products and goods coming from the interior of the province.

The Huéznar River, declared a Natural Monument in some of its stretches, maintains a relatively constant flow thanks to the aquifers that feed its springs. This permanent availability of water favours the development of one of the best-preserved riverside forests in Andalusia, where alders, ashes, willows and poplars create environmental conditions very different from those of the Mediterranean forest that dominates the surrounding slopes.

The diversity of habitats turns this river corridor into an important refuge for fauna. Otters, kingfishers, herons, amphibians and numerous invertebrates find food and refuge here, while the riverside vegetation plays a fundamental role in the regulation of the riverbed, the protection of the soil against erosion and the conservation of water quality.

Together with these natural values, the trail preserves the memory of one of the first industrialisation processes developed in Andalusia. The nearby Iron Factory of El Pedroso, founded in 1817, took advantage of the abundance of mineral, wood and water to establish one of the most important iron and steel industries of 19th-century Spain. Under the direction of the engineer Francisco Antonio de Elorza, its facilities incorporated advanced production techniques for the period and gave rise to an important industrial centre that transformed the economy of the whole district.

The former railway played an essential role in this development. The arrival of the Seville-Mérida line facilitated the transport of raw materials and manufactured products, integrating the Sierra Norte into the great commercial and industrial networks of the country.

Today, the trail makes it possible to travel through a landscape where nature has recovered a large part of the space occupied by industrial activity. The former infrastructures, integrated among the vegetation, recall the close relationship that existed for centuries between the natural resources of the Sierra Norte and the economic development of this territory, turning this route into one of the itineraries where the joint evolution of the landscape and human activity can best be understood.
